Douglas Zaruba is known for his fresh, contemporary interpretation of
classical design. Reflected in the clean, modern lines of
his jewelry are the
balance, proportion, and textures of ancient civilizations.
While training as a painter and sculptor, Douglas Zaruba became interested in the concept of jewelry as wearable sculpture. "Jewelry is three-dimensional sculpture as well as kinetic sculpture. It is site-specific sculpture in that it must fit in harmony with the human form. Jewelry originated as a symbol of power and is an intimate repository of ideals and values."
"I consider myself not an artist but an artisan - a small link in a chain of craftsmen over three hundred and fifty generations long, who learned and developed their skills and passed them on to the next generation. In the work that I present to you, I have tried to discover the timeless essence of their designs to create objects that, when worn on the body, harmonize with the voice within us. I will continue to strive to achieve a level of craftsmanship that past and future artisans will respect."
